The Center for Injury and Research Policy

Center for Injury Research and Policy (CIRP)

Although great strides have been made in reducing injury-related deaths, injury remains the leading cause of death for persons 1 to 44 years of age in the United States.  Annually, injuries account for approximately 3.5 million years of potential life lost (YPLL), an indicator used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to measure premature death in the United States.  Injuries account for more YPLL than heart disease and cancer combined, which are the next leading causes of YPLL nationally. Research is the cornerstone for successful injury control.  Most injuries can be prevented using the same approaches successfully used during the past 150 years to control and eradicate many types of medical illness and disease.  Based on scientific principles, the Center for Injury Research and Policy (CIRP) conducts research activities to address prevention, acute care, rehabilitation and biomechanics related to injury.

Children are the most vulnerable to injury and suffer the greatest long-term effects. Activities are underway at CIRP to increase energy and capacity related to pediatric injury research and prevention which will have the maximum positive impact on the health and well-being of children, their families and communities. As one of The Research Institute’s Centers of Emphasis and through its close affiliations with Children's Hospital and the Ohio State University, CIRP is well positioned to accomplish its goals.

Goals:

  • Increase the scientific understanding of the epidemiology, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, biomechanics of injuries through high quality cutting-edge translational research.
  • Provide leadership and technical assistance for injury research and prevention from local to international levels.
  • Educate medical and public health professionals and trainees about injury research, and effective prevention strategies for injury prevention.
  • Educate the public and key public policy decision-makers regarding the importance of injury research and prevention.
  • Provide leadership in the development, implementation, and scientific evaluation of public policy addressing the prevention of injuries.
